Elpis Learning Centre

Elpis School was one of the first Learning Centre and was established in 1999 by U Soe Min and Naw He Htoo.  In 1999 there were 60 children in KG to grade 2 and 2 teachers.

In 2015-2016 academic year, the children are 369 and classes go up to grade 7. The school is located in Mae Pa, not far from the centre of Mae Sot. Most of the students are from the Karen ethnic group, yet some are Burman, Mon, Pa-O.

The school is always bursting with activity in the very small compound given by a local Church. It has struggled in the past few years because of the very little funding it received. The organisation and management of the headmistress is quite striking as well as the ability of the teachers to manage classes packed with students who are all eager to learn in order to have access to a better future.
Visitors are always impressed The inspiring environment which consists of joy, commitment and learning always has a powerful impact on visitors. Elpis has boarding house for the students who live far away from their parents or whose parents live in Burma side. A few months ago, the boarding house had to relocate, as a demand by the Thai landowner.
