Elpis School Brief History

The Elpis School was established on 6 June 1999. The founders were the principal, U Soe Min including the vice-head mistress, Naw He too. There are total five teachers were teaching sixty students who were provided with levels of Kindergarten (A). KG (B), Grade one and two. The school is located in Mae Pa, close to the cemetery. At that time, the school was named “Ther Yar Kon School” which means Good Scenery Hill. In the first three months, we did not get any donations from anywhere so we, the teachers had to volunteer and organise the school well. The headmaster and vice-head teacher had to try hard to reduce the headship in the first school year the outcome of facing many kinds of difficulties.

We joined with BMWEC Burmese Migrant Education Committee and got favour from BMWFC. The formal chairperson, Daw Lay Lay Phyu (Mrs. Lily Rama) tried to catch up with the support for the remaining months of the school year 1999-2000. Finally, in September 1999, we got support from BMWEC till the end of the school year. As the land owner did not allow us for the next academic year, so we moved the location in Mac Ku, Mac Sod area for the 2000-2007 school year. The donation we got from Dr. Marti was not sufficient for all the school running costs. According to the unwrought support, two teachers resigned from their duties and left the school, and then went back to Burma.

For the Academic year 2000 – 2001, we only had two male teachers and one female teacher who taught Kindergarten to grade two. After finishing the 2000-2001 school year at Mac Ku, the land owner did not allow to operate the school for the next year. Therefore we relocated the school to Mae la close to cultivated field in 2001-2002. Dr. Marti continued the donation for 2001-2002 year. Due to the relocation of school to diferent places, some students could not attend and continue their studies anymore. At that time, we did not have transportation or car, either, As the headmaster and vice-head teacher felt sympathy for those children who lived very long distances from school they discussed and agreed to buy a tri-cycle for transportation. They bought it and transported students every Monday to Friday. Students who lived near school come to school on foot and students who live a little far, come to school by cycling.

The headmaster. U Soe Min resigned from his duty so  Mr. Wiwa was chosen  to take    the   head teacherposition and Naw He’ Htoo became vice-head teacher. They have to do all the tasks to be sustainable. For the funding of school year 2002-2003, we got from Saya Moses. At the beginning of 2003-2004     school year Saya Moses resettled into 3rd country so that the funding of school was shut and faced many difficulties running the school. No more support for school and running cost. In order to get through this outcome, the head teachers reported the situation to the priest of Four Square Church, Mr. John. The priest helped the school transportation for one week. He also transported students who live far from school by his motorbike. The priest of Four Square Church, Mr. John introduced us with teachers from Philippine. The Philippine teachers, Ms. Maria and Ms. Rosé Ting came to visit the school in late 2003 and introduced with our teachers and students. They also taught students English subject. In that academic year, the school was renamed from “Thayar Kon (Good Scenery Hill) to Elpis Center. Elpis means hope.

As land owners did not allow opening the school so we relocated the school from Mac Pa to Bang Song Kwe section in Mae sod and finished the academic year. We could do the school closing and giving prices ceremony successfully. We also faced with the Thai people who are living around the school. They disliked the noise of children and teaching. Therefore, we moved the school to Mae Pa, section (1) in the raining season for 2004 – 2005 academic year. We built the school building inappropriately in advance and continued the teaching. The school land is the land of the Four Square Church priest, Mr. John’s wife. At the moment, they still allow us to use the land to 2005 we joined the umbrella organization, BMWBC and asked for help to run the school properly. We became one of the member schools of BMVEC in 2005.

The school director and the head teacher have been supervising and managing the school smoothly starting from forming the school and until now. The hardship they have faced and the struggle they did was the love of children.

With big thanks.
