  • School Background

Parahita Migrant Learning Center was established in 2006 at Moo9, Baan Huay Nokklae, Tambon Chonkaep, Ampur Phopphra, Tak district by U Kaw Than La, with initial students around 20 to 30 and 3 teachers (1 female, 2 monks). Students in Parahita are from Myanmar of Burmese, Burmese Thai, Mon and Kayin ethnicity. In Huay Nok Klae area, parents mainly work as agricultural workers. As for the population ratio, the Burmese people made up numbers several times larger than the Thai. In 2021, the school has 97 students and 4 teachers and 1 office staff, offering classes from kindergarten to Grade 5. The school has Parents-Teacher Association (PTA).

Parahita Migrant Learning Center uses new Myanmar curriculum taught in Burmese language.

Old Myanmar curriculum has 6 subjects for primary school:

  1. Burmese Language
  2. English Language
  3. Mathematic
  4. Science
  5. Geography
  6. History (world history & Myanmar History)

The new curriculum widens its scope of education from offering 6 subjects only to 12 subjects. While the first 6 subjects remain the same while new subjects such as Civil and Ethical Values, Life Skills, Physical, Arts and Music are added on.

Teachers of Parahita have various teacher training and workshops recommended by BMWEC. They have and will continue to receive various training in

The current school building was made up of cement and zinc roof without windows. It has 6 rooms and 1 hall in the center. There are 4 toilets and a small open space that can be considered as a playground for the school. The school compound is estimated to be 20 meters and 40 meters in area.

  • Funding

From 2006 until 2012, the school was supported by the temple and donations from BMWEC. Together with the support from BMWEC, from 2010 to 2012, it secured monthly support for Thai driver, and occasional facility improvement cost, etc were provided by Peaceful Beans. From December 2012 until 2019, support money from the donor and parents contributed the monthly school fee (50B-150B depending on the distance from school). From December 2012 – March 2019, monthly salary for all the teachers, students’ school fee for all of the Grade 2, 3 and 4 students (as grants for the students), cost for purchasing a pick-up truck (school bus) and yearly license fee, and other miscellaneous fee for facility improvement (desks and chairs, storages, construction fee for teachers’ room, hand-washing facility, maintenance fee for water purifier etc) and educational materials (picture books, sewing kits etc) were provided by Peaceful Beans.

For the fiscal year 2020-2021 no money was collected from the parents because the teaching style was changed to HBL, and so became depended totally on the support money from the donors. Because of COVID-19 situation, only monthly salary for all the teachers and driver (for July – December 2020, February – April 2021) were provided by Peaceful Beans. For June and January, when there was no Home-Based Learning carried out, the teachers’ salary was not provided by Peaceful Beans, but provided by other donors through BMWEC. The gasoline fee for the school bus was also provided by other donors through BMWEC. Besides basic monthly support from Peaceful Beans, there were other forms of support (stationeries, technical advice and training opportunities, income generation program, gasoline fee and teachers’ salary of 2 months in 2020-2021, COVID-19 emergency food packages etc) provided by the donors through BMWEC, HWF and other organizations. Rent and utilities were supported by the temple.
